Scotty's Castle

Notice: Closed since a 2015 flash flood, Scotty’s Castle is welcoming limited visitors while restoration moves forward. Join a ranger or Death Valley Natural History Association guide for an exterior tour of the 1920s Spanish Revival estate most weekends through April 17. Private weekday tours are available for small groups on request. The next construction phase begins in 2027, and the castle could fully reopen as early as November 2028. Get tickets at dvnha.org.

Fifty-three miles from The Oasis at Death Valley and within the park boundaries, Scotty’s Castle stands as a tribute to friendship. In the early 1900’s, Walter Scott (Death Valley Scotty) convinced Albert Johnson to grubstake his gold mining expeditions.

The gold never materialized but Johnson fell in love with Death Valley and took a liking to the colorful Scotty. Johnson and his wife, Bessie, built this two-million dollar home with luxurious appointments and Scotty claimed it was his and was building it from the profits from his gold mine. Today, the estate is owned and preserved by the National Park Service.
